Objective : This study aimed to investigate the effects of Hangeul vocalization training through respirators and drawing activities using visual perception pads on cognitive and lung functions for the elderly with cognitive disabilities using community daycare centers
Methods : From July to October 2019, Hangeul vocalization training was conducted five times a week and two hours per session for a total of eight weeks for 42 elderly people with cognitive disabilities using the Day Care Center located in G, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Mental state examination for dementia screening (MMSE-DS) was performed to measure the subject's cognitive function, and it was measured using a digital lung capacity meter (Pony Fx) to measure lung function and respiratory muscle strength.
Results : Hangeul vocalization training was limited in changes in cognitive function, but there was a significant difference between groups in respiratory muscle strength, which is maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) (p<0.05).
Conclusion : It was confirmed that Hangeul vocalization training using a respirator can be easily applied anywhere and can be used as a program to strengthen respiratory muscles through short-term respiratory intervention.
